Most digital cameras will produce very high quality pictures for your website. In fact, most cameras right out of the box that are too high quality.

We say that because the picture that comes right out of the camera to your computer will have such a high resolution that it will literally be larger than the size of your computer screen. The imaging software used to view it will have to condense it automatically or you'll need to manually resize it to see the whole thing on your screen if you want to see the full picture.

A picture uploaded to your website will in most cases need to be reduced down to 1/16th of the original size or less of the picture that comes right out of the camera.

High resolution pictures are necessary for printing purposes to get sharp and clear prints. But they are not necessary to get sharp and easy to view pictures on a website. In fact, for a picture on a website you want the picture to be the lowest resolution possible that will still produce a reasonably sharp, crisp image. That's because the lower the resolution, the smaller the file size will be and the smaller the file size is the faster the picture will download.

Most cameras are set to take pictures at its highest available resolution by default. Most also have the capability of taking pictures at lower resolutions too. If you take alot of pictures for primary use on a website then your camera may have a resolution setting on it that is at or near the optimium size for your site.

In general, website pictures shouldn't be any larger than about 400 pixels wide. If your camera has an available resolution setting of 800X___ or less then you may be able to take pictures that can then be uploaded directly to your site from your camera without any resizing needed at all. Any pictures that do need to be resized will end up with a much lower total file size than if they were resized down from a larger starting resolution. Some pictures may only need to be cropped instead of resized.

The overall quality of the picture won't be much less than the highest resolution version and any difference won't be easily recognizable by the naked eye. Another advantage is if you don't have to resize every image to get it set for your site then you'll save yourself alot of time.
